Military Phone Malware Targets Androids - Business Insider

The fellas at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology are calling it, "The Malware that will steal your life," and their doomsaying is not unfounded.

The Technology Review reports that scientists at the Naval Surface Warfare Center in Crane, Ind., have designed an Android Operating System malware that secretly takes images (muted, so no shutter sound) and logs the orientation of the phone at the time each image is taken. Then, through reverse construction, and image enhancement, the malware recreates whatever room in which you may be standing, including the objects in that room.

The Review stipulates that the technology could even be used to gleen credit card numbers, or serve to provide intelligence for thieves looking to steal certain items, or case living areas from the inside?Or, more likely, to steal secret documents from other unfriendly governments.

From the Review:

[They] call their visual malware PlaceRaider?and have created it as an app capable of running in the background of any smartphone using the Android 2.3 operating system. Their idea is that the malware would be embedded in a camera app that the user would download and run, a process that would give the malware the permissions it needs to take photos and send them.

The Review's report comes in conjunction with another report?that a smart phone crowdsourcing app can map the floorplans of any building.

The military applications for these technologies, it bears mentioning, are virtually limitless. But like the sonar?imaging technology in "The Dark Knight," the recon technology represents a slippery moral slope when it comes to privacy of innocents.

'Scar free healing' clue in mice

Mice with brittle skin, which tears off in order to escape predators, may offer clues to healing wounds without scarring, according to US researchers.

Some African spiny mice lost up to 60% of the skin from their backs, says the study published in the journal Nature.

Unlike wounds in other mammals, the skin then rapidly healed and regrew hairs rather than forming a scar.

Scientists want to figure out how the healing takes place and if it could apply to people.

Salamanders, some of which can regrow entire limbs, are famed for their regenerative abilities. It has made them the focus of many researchers hoping to figure out how to produce the same effect in people.

Mammals, however, have very limited ability to regrow lost organs. Normally a scar forms to seal the wound.

Although many scienctists are trying to speed up the healing process, our studies on spiny mice and salamanders show that slowing things down is the path towards regeneration?

End Quote Ashley Seifert University of Florida

"This study shows that mammals as a group may in fact have higher regenerative abilities then they are given credit for," said Dr Ashley Seifert from the University of Florida.

Regeneration hub

As well as rapid skin healing, the mice were also able to heal large circular holes punched in their ears - they regenerated hair follicles, sweat glands and cartilage.

Tests showed the mice produced a "regeneration hub" known as a blastema in order to repair the injury. It is this bundle of stem cells that is also used by the salamander to rebuild missing body parts.

Dr Seifert told the BBC: "It is thought that one of the main constraints on regenerating appendages in humans, or mammals for that fact, is the failure to form a blastema."

He wants to investigate how the structure forms in these mice.

Another difference was in the web of proteins that holds cells in place - the extracellular matrix.

He said: "These mice appear to deposit extracellular matrix into their wounds at a slower rate than mice, pigs or humans.

"Although many scienctists are trying to speed up the healing process, our studies on spiny mice and salamanders show that slowing things down is the path towards regeneration."

However, working out what is happening and then trying to transfer the findings to people is likely to be a long journey.

Commenting on the study, Elly Tanaka, from the Technische University Dresden, said: "These studies suggest that the pathways leading to regeneration, at least of the skin, that are normally associated with amphibians are also accessible in mammals."

She added that harnessing the process "in a controlled manner in other wound situations may help to promote scarless healing".

In the restaurant industry, there is much disagreement between whether a used POS system will actually save you money or not. However, if you?re just starting your business, you may not have much of an option.

New systems start around $3,000 and can get much more expensive. A used POS system, on the other hand, can be a cost effective way to get started. Consider these 5 tips to ensure you are in fact saving money.

1. Do You Have Manufacturer Support?
Buying a used POS may conjure up thoughts of spammy Craigslist ads or garage sales. Yet, as a professional business you want to make professional purchases. While many may frown upon buying used POS systems for lack of manufacturer support, there are options to avoid that.

Global marketplace, PowerSourceOnline.com suggests, ?The secondary market for used POS equipment plays a vital role in supporting our entire infrastructure.? Getting your system from the proper retailer will be key.

  • Purchase directly from the manufacturer. When doing this, you can ensure that your used or refurbished product is up to their standards. Also consider purchasing from a company that specializes in POS service and repairs.

2. Is it Up To Date?
The POS industry is changing quickly. From online commerce to mobile credit card processing, it?s tough to keep up. And thus, it may seem counterproductive to purchase a used POS system. However, with a high percentage of businesses failing before their first year of business is through, there are many up to date systems on the used market to choose from.

  • Try to find a system that allows for integration with other POS options such as online and mobile.

3. Does it have Equipment?
The benefit of buying a new POS system is often that it comes with cheap accessories. Many companies will offer packaged deals to make the high price a bit more attractive. If you can buy a cheap used POS but it comes with no software or accessories, you may end up spending just as much.

  • Be sure items such as receipt printers, cash drawers, and software are all included. A used POS system can be beneficial, but not as a singular entity.

4. Can You Use the Software?
The most important question to ask yourself is whether the software is up to date and usable, or not. This is the brains behind the equipment, and without it you have nothing. Purchasing a used POS however, does not mean you have to use old software.

  • Be sure that the software license is transferrable which will allow you to update it. Some are and some aren?t, and some companies may charge a fee for this service.

5. Have You Tested it Yourself?
As a business owner, you have certain practices in place that make your business run the way it does. From customer care to quick dining room service, you want your POS system to reflect that. However, not all systems are created equal.

  • See and use the system before buying, regardless of how new it may be. You want to be sure that you can customize the system to your liking, or that it?s already in working order for you.

Used POS systems can be a valuable asset for your small and growing restaurant business. However, it doesn?t have to be a permanent solution. Investing in a used system until your business is able to purchase a brand new one can be a great way to save money.

Can Blogs Build Online Brand Presence?

Can Blogs Build Online Brand Presence

In a technological world of tweeting and status updates, social media networking has become the e-marketing buzzword, but what about the humble Blog? Can blogs be leveraged effectively to guarantee an increased online brand presence? Blogs,as a medium of communication that can have tremendous value to the small business owner and can be used as an effective marketing tool.

Effective Use of Blogs for Online Brand Presence

A blog is a web page on the internet that consists of short posts on different or specific subjects. The material is updated frequently and the information is more than likely to be presented in a chronological fashion. Since 1999, the weblog community has grown from a few thousand users to a worldwide community of over 100 million. Divided into two general categories, blog are either personal, much like a journal, or business related which is when they are a tool for corporate communications and to establish an online brand presence.

The Advantages of Having a Business Blog for Online Brand Presence

  • Business blogs can be used to connect with a much wider audience of potential customers. They are used to drive traffic towards a business website and are an excellent way for being able to share information with people on a global platform.
  • Business blog software is easy to use. It is a matter of a few simple clicks to be able to post the information that you have directly onto the blog web page. The three most popular blog software companies are Wordpress.com, Blogger.com and Typepad, all offering valuable software for the business blogger.
  • Blogging is cheap. In fact, it?s almost free. If you are a small business owner, you might not have the time to learn how to write the programs needed to keep a website up and running, and sometimes the cost of hiring a web designer and developer is out of reach. Blogging means that the business can have an important web presence for a few cents per day. It will get your business name out onto the World Wide Web and if you team it with some clever social media networking, you can have as much influence as any website.
  • Share your knowledge. Business blogs provide business owners with the opportunity to share their expert knowledge in their sphere of business. It is a way of adding value to the products and services that a business offers, and if you do have a web site and are able to set up cross-links then you will be increasing the traffic to the website, quickly and effectively.

A business blog can be one of the most powerful marketing and networking tools that your business can use. It will give you a valuable online brand presence and over time, the blog will develop a following of readers who will always be interested in the latest news and developments in the industry.

The best way to develop a loyal readership if to have regular updates. They do not have to be daily updates, but they should be posted at regular intervals so that people know when to check back for new information. If you are just starting out then you can even do a blog post once a week, just ensure that it is always on the same day, so people who come to expect it won?t be disappointed when they log in to your blog page. You can always up the frequency later as it gains momentum and you have an established online brand presence.

Clarke?s slash was turning point for Canada

?

Pete Mahovlich, number 20, Bill White, 17, goalie Ken Dryden, Phil Esposito, 7 and Gary Bergman 2 of Canada celebrate after winning Game 6 of the 1972 Summit Series on Sept. 24, 1972, at the Luzhniki Ice Palace in Moscow, Russia.

Photograph by: Melchior DiGiacomo , Getty Images

Clarke?s Game 6 slash on Kharlamov was turning point for Team Canada

Team Canada?s 5-4 loss in Game 5 still resonated on Sept. 24 when the Canadians and Soviets waited for the puck to drop.

The biggest question heading into Game 6: how would the professionals react after blowing 3-0 and 4-1 leads after the Soviets scored five goals in the third period, including four in a row in the final 10-plus minutes of the game? A win on this night, and the Soviets would lock up this eight-game series.

How devastating was the Game 5 loss? This was Phil Esposito?s post-game view of the debacle: ?Do I think losing this game will hurt us psychologically in the next game? It?s nothing psychological. We know now who?s the better team!?

There was no scoring in the first period, but 1:12 into the second Yuri Liapkin scored in a game that was to see Canada assessed 31 minutes in penalties, while the Soviets only received four. Astonishingly, however, only minutes after the Liapkin goal, Team Canada got goals from Dennis Hull, Yvan Cournoyer and Paul Henderson in 1:23 before Alexander Yakushev lifted his colleagues to within one with fewer than three minutes remaining in the period.

As it developed, that was to be the game?s final goal despite the rash of penalties Team Canada received from German referees Josef Kompalla and Franz Baader, including a double minor for charging in the first period and a high-sticking major in the second to Esposito.

This ?must-win? game for Team Canada could have been over early because of the penalties that had them playing short-handed for 17 minutes.

The Yakushev goal came only nine seconds after Hull was caught with a slashing penalty and only 25 seconds after the teams were at full strength, Team Canada was left short-handed two men for a full two minutes when Esposito was called for a high-sticking major and the team with a bench minor.

What turned Team Canada around? Ken Dryden, who had allowed 12 goals in his two previous starting assignments, was the difference. So were penalty-killers Peter Mahovlich, Ron Ellis and Red Berenson. The defence corps, led by Serge Savard, who had missed Games 4 and 5 after suffering an ankle injury in Game 3, brought their ?A? game to the Ice Palace.

This game was notable, as well, for a slashing minor and a misconduct to Bobby Clarke midway through the second period that is remembered even to this day. Nobody knew it at the time, but it was a major turning point in the series.

What happened was that Clarke chased down Valeri Kharlamov and struck him with a two-hander that left the Soviets? best player with a broken ankle. Kharlamov finished the game, missed Game 7, but was ineffective in the series finale.

Years later, assistant coach John Ferguson admitted: ?I called Clarke over to the bench, looked over at Kharlamov and said: ?I think he needs a tap on the ankle.? I didn?t think twice about it. It was Us vs. Them. And Kharlamov was killing us. I mean, somebody had to do it, and I sure wasn?t going to ask Henderson.?

On his part, Clarke always has insisted he doesn?t recall Ferguson telling him this, but added: ?If I hadn?t learned to lay on a two-hander once in a while, I?d never have left Flin Flon.?

On the 30th anniversary of this once-in-a-lifetime series, Henderson was to describe Clarke?s slash on Kharlamov as ?the low point of the series.?

?If Clarke hits him with a bodycheck and knocks him out, that?s fair and square,? Henderson said. ?To go out and deliberately try to take somebody out, there?s no sportsmanship in that. To me, it?s the same as shooting a guy in the hallway. Clarke was probably the only guy on the whole team that would have done it.

?We had a lot of tough guys on that team, but there weren?t many guys who played hockey that way,? Henderson added. ?We had guys who would stand up and look you right in the eye, punch you in the nose if you had a fight, but I don?t think they would bushwhack.

?It?s not something I would subscribe to. That?s not sportsmanship. Hockey is meant to be a tough game, and it?s a physical game, but to go out and deliberately try to take a guy out, I don?t think there?s any place in hockey for that.?

Needless to say, Clarke had a quick response to Henderson?s criticism.

?Why is he saying those things now? Clarke asked reporters. ?All I can say is it?s improper to criticize someone 30 years later.?

Henderson, you should know, promptly retracted his criticism of his Summit Series teammate and linemate.

'Meteors' seen across UK skies

People across the country report their sightings

People from across the UK have reported seeing bright objects in the night sky, thought to be meteors or "space junk"

Coastguards in Northern Ireland took calls from people who saw the objects from Coleraine on the north coast, to Strangford Lough in the south east.

The lights were seen as far north as Caithness in Scotland as well as in Wales and Norfolk in East Anglia.

Experts said the sightings could be satellite debris, burning up on entry to the atmosphere.

The lights have also been reported in the Midlands, parts of north-east England and in Glasgow and Edinburgh.

Brian Guthrie in Grangemouth near Edinburgh, who watched the objects pass through the sky, said it appeared to be something "pretty large breaking up in the atmosphere".

"I've seen shooting stars and meteor showers before, but this was much larger and much more colourful."

Coastguards in the Shetland Islands received what they believe is Scotland's most northerly sighting of the meteor at 23:00 BST.

They were called by a member of the public who had seen a bright white light in the sky over the Stacks of Duncansby in Caithness.

'Yellow and orange ball'

One person who contacted the BBC said it was "kind of a mass of light, gold light. Everything moving in unison".

"It wasn't diverging... I thought it was a plane at first. It was quite low on the horizon and moving much slower than I'd expect to see a shooting star, but it was amazing."

Another said the sight was "like Independence Day" - a reference to the film about an alien invasion of Earth.

Diane Martin from Rainworth in Nottinghamshire said she saw "a bright yellow and orange ball" and considered calling the police before her husband checked the internet and found other people had seen it.

She told the BBC: "We only saw the one. It was quite low as well. It wasn't that far away to be honest. We thought something was actually going to come down in the actual village.

"It was travelling from east to west. It was coming down but it was going across more than it was going down."

Durham Constabulary said they were "inundated" with calls from members of the public across the north-east who were "concerned" as to the sightings of unidentified flying objects lighting up the night sky.

In Wales, sightings were reported between Cardiff and Swansea in the south, Aberystwyth in Ceredigion and Criccieth in Gwynedd.

Howard Parry spotted a "stream of light" while looking out to sea from his caravan in Llanrhystud in Ceredigion at around 23:00 BST.

"I thought first of all it was a plane going down then I thought what the devil is it?

Many of the eyewitness accounts suggest this spectacle was the result of old space hardware falling back to Earth.

Classic meteors - fragments of rock - tend to flash across the sky in an instant.

An incoming satellite on the other hand, can take longer to blaze overhead, giving many more people the chance to notice it.

There is now a wild jungle of redundant hardware up there - everything from old rocket stages that continue to loop around the Earth decades after they were launched, to flecks of paint that have lifted off once shiny space vehicles and floated off into the distance.

Gravity demands it all comes back to Earth at some point.

The bigger the returning object, the bigger the light show.

"The best way I can explain it is that it looked like a train with all different carriages on it... it lasted about 25 to 30 seconds.

"I've never seen anything like it - it was really, really bright," he said.

Chris Butler, of Tonypandy in the Rhondda, said he saw "a triangle of orange lights" that "didn't look like a typical meteorite".

'Space debris'

He added: "It looked similar to aeroplane lights but it looked really huge so it obviously wasn't a plane or anything."

Dr Tim O'Brien, associate director of the Jodrell Bank Observatory, told the BBC it was difficult to know the cause of the phenomenon.

"It's hard to say exactly, whether it was a chunk of rock coming in from outer space, burning up in the atmosphere, or a bit of space debris we call it, space junk, which is basically man-made stuff from a spacecraft that's burning up in the atmosphere.

"[The object was] probably 80 miles up or so, high up, moving very fast, actually, 18,000 miles an hour, probably, at least."

Colin Johnston, from Armagh Planetarium in Northern Ireland, said the lights were unlikely to be part of a meteor shower.

"There are actually several small, faint, meteor showers scheduled across September but they're so unspectacular, not many people actually bother looking for them.

"I think that actually this spectacle tonight might not be associated with that."

"I think it's something just by chance has happened to come in tonight, some piece of actual space junk floating around the universe for billions of years has just picked tonight to fall in across our skies, or a satellite that's been up for some years has decided to burn up," he said.

Fiat, Italy govt to examine export-focused measures

MILAN/ROME (Reuters) - Italy's Fiat and the Italian government said on Saturday they will look for ways to improve the company's manufacturing efficiency, as the automaker pledged to keep building cars in Italy while shifting its focus to foreign export markets.

Fiat's decision in late August to freeze planned investments to avoid further losses in a weak car market has sparked a firestorm of criticism from trade unions and politicians.

Unions are worried about potential job losses if the company eventually shifts manufacturing to countries where wages are lower.

Fiat said in a statement it planned to "re-orient" its business model in Italy "to focus on exports, particularly outside of Europe."

That means, a person familiar with the situation said, Fiat could focus on possibly making Jeep and Chrysler models for export.

Italy's Prime Minister Mario Monti and three cabinet ministers met for five hours with Fiat chief executive Sergio Marchionne and chairman John Elkann at the prime minister's office in Rome.

At the meeting, Fiat outlined its forecasts for the Italian and European markets, focusing on the strategic prospects offered by its integration with its U.S. unit Chrysler, the statement said, without providing any details.

Fiat CEO Marchionne has previously said he does not see the Italian car market recovering until at least 2014. Fiat recently postponed the launch of its new Punto compact to 2015.

"Fiat also confirmed its strategy of investing in Italy, at the right moment, to develop new products to take full advantage of the recovery of the European market," the statement said, mentioning research and development as an example.

The Industry Ministry will set up a working group to examine how to improve Fiat's export capacity, the statement said.

Fiat plans to release full details of its new investment plans on October 30.

Marchionne and Elkann left Monti's office without speaking to journalists.

The carefully-worded statement made no mention of further production halts or temporary layoffs, which Fiat is expected to continue throughout autumn to match slack demand.

"It's a good thing that Fiat renewed its pledge to stay in Italy, where it aims to strengthen its competitiveness in research and innovation," said UILM trade union secretary Rocco Palombella in a statement.

"In effect, the company has confirmed its plans to invest in Italy at the first sign of a recovery in the European market."

Analysis: 'Manufactured' fury behind Muslim protests

Akhtar Soomro / Reuters

Protests ignited by a controversial film that ridicules Islam's Prophet Muhammad spread throughout Muslim world.

By Jim Maceda, NBC News

News analysis

CAIRO ? It's been just over a week since hundreds, perhaps a thousand, angry and offended Egyptians gathered outside the U.S. Embassy's gates in Cairo. They carried Islamist banners and chanted, "The only God is God and Muhammad is his Prophet.''

At one point perhaps two dozen of the more brazen protesters scaled the wall and breached the embassy grounds. They lowered and destroyed the U.S. flag and raised a black, Islamic flag in its place. They fled when security guards (not the Egyptian police) fired warning shots over their heads.

This amounted to little violence, but the act itself was the psychological equivalent of taking a beachhead. Within hours reports emerged that a similarly sized group had stormed the U.S. Consulate in Benghazi, Libya. Some were calling it a copy-cat protest, but it was much more perilous: Four Americans were killed in the melee, including the U.S. ambassador. Within 48 hours the world would witness similar scenes unfolding at U.S. embassies, businesses and symbols of power in more than 20 countries.

Protesters scaled the walls of the U.S. Embassy in Cairo and pulled down the American flag during a protest over what they said was a film produced in the United States that insulted the Prophet Muhammad. NBC's Richard Engel reports.

This paroxysm of protest ? and violence ? had begun in Cairo. But what, really, began there?

Much of the mainstream media has played it as a spontaneous reaction to a disgusting film clip which denigrated Muslims and happened to be made and promoted in the USA.

But New York Times editorialist Ross Douthat argued it had nothing to do with a "genuine popular backlash," but everything to do with old-style power politics. For Jim Clifton, chairman of the pollster Gallup, it wasn't about religion or politics, but rather the desperate expression of young Arab males, deeply humiliated because they couldn't find jobs.

'Political manipulation'
Egyptian analysts seem to be more in agreement: Many protesters outside the U.S. Embassy were genuinely offended by the film. But the real driving force behind the protest ? in Cairo and Benghazi ? were radical Islamist groups who know how to exploit rage for political gain.

Actors and the assistant director of the film "Innocence of Muslims" told NBC News that the original spoken lines in the screenplay were dubbed over without their knowledge. NBC's Mike Taibbi reports.

"There are still a lot of questions that need to be answered," said Mona Eltahawy, an Egyptian journalist. "For instance, why after two months of being on YouTube did this film suddenly explode on the anniversary of 9/11? That is political manipulation and manufactured outrage that the right wing is all too happy to use.''

Egypt issues arrest warrants for Terry Jones, Coptic Christians over anti-Islam video

By "right-wing" Eltahawy means ultra conservatives ? often called Salafists ? who practice a strict, puritanical form of Islam and make up the fastest-growing Islamic political and social movement in the world. On the night of the Cairo embassy attacks, the Salafists saw an opportunity to flex their muscles.

"A lot of people went to the U.S. Embassy not just because of the film, and after the film died down, it wasn't about the film anymore," Eltahawy explained. "They went because of anti-U.S. sentiment, because they know in this region how easy it is to fan the flames of anger."

Government officials asked the magazine, which specializes in satire, not to print the drawings which portray Muslim prophet Mohammed as a naked man. NBC's Brian Williams reports.

Dr. Gamal Abdel Gawad, a highly respected Egyptian political analyst, agrees.

"I don't think it was spontaneous," he told NBC News. "People were gathering in one place at a certain time of day, so there was some mobilization behind it.''

Actress sues, says she was fooled into appearing in anti-Muslim movie

And it's clear to Gawad who did the mobilizing. "Radical Salafist groups orchestrated it to express their views and embarrass the [more moderate] Muslim Brotherhood because of competition between Islamic groups."

Post Arab-Spring power play
What's enfolding in Egypt ? and to a large extent in Libya ? is not just a series of isolated power plays. In both countries the leaders who emerged from the Arab Spring are struggling to eke out a political center in order to govern their new democracies, while under extreme pressure from more radical Islamist ? sometimes jihadist ? forces. Everything is still at stake.

This has led some Egyptians ? like Eltahawy ? to worry that their 18-month-old revolution will be hijacked by the extremists.
"I'm hoping that this right-wing drive of the past days is the dying pangs of a group that understands that the revolution was started by us, the majority, and we remain very much the majority."

Crowds of angry protesters showed up in Kabul, Afghanistan and Jakarta, Indonesia. The violent uprising followed a deadly weekend marking the deaths of eight International Security Assistance Force members. NBC's Atia Abawi reports.

Gawad is more sanguine about the future. "The revolution is over. The president is in power, and Egyptian political parties are busy preparing for elections and campaigns. The radical groups can't get significant numbers elected," he said. Still, as dramatic scenes over the past week have shown, those groups ? often armed ? can wreak havoc.

Egyptian President Mohammed Morsi seemed to give ground to the Salafists, even leaving the country at the height of a standoff between stone-throwing protesters and riot police for diplomatic meetings abroad.

Finally, last Saturday, he gave the order to clear out the protesters and appeared on TV calling on Muslims to protect foreign citizens and property. Some called it a turning point.

Now that a Paris-based satirical magazine has published cartoons of a naked Prophet Muhammad, will Egyptians respond with silent indignation, peaceful marches or be the first to storm their French Embassy?

Baxter: An industrial robot that anyone can use

23 hrs.

The robots that fill factories and put together cars are dangerous, difficult to operate and out of date, says Rodney Brooks, cofounder of iRobot and now Rethink Robotics. He's building a better one ? one that can work with and be operated by normal humans.

Brooks studied and taught robotics and artificial intelligence for many years at MIT. He and some colleagues eventually founded iRobot, creators of the popular Roomba vacuum robot, and also maker?of many military and industrial devices. His new company, Rethink Robotics, aims to revolutionize the industrial robots that work in factories around the world. Rethink and Brooks are profiled in a recent article at MIT's Technology Review.

Brooks?points out that the robots that assist workers are generally just not very worker-friendly. They can't be reprogrammed except by specialists, they're constructed for single tasks and they are often dangerous to be around. For instance, many have cages around them for safety purpose since they will operate regardless of human presence ? such as someone's hand in their work area.

He decided to build a robot that was the opposite of all this, and the result, still experimental but already promising, is called "Baxter." It's meant not to be a heavy-duty device for superhuman tasks, but rather a helper for the average line worker. It stands about 6?feet tall, has two flexible arms with grippers?and is topped by a face, displayed on an LCD screen.

One might question the relevance of a face on a robot. But it's not just there to make Baxter look friendly. It's functional, with the eyes looking toward?where the robot is going to be working, or otherwise indicating how it is working.

Its powerful arms also have a human touch ? literally. Not only can they sense obstacles and accommodate them, but they can be easily moved around by hand. In fact, Baxter can be trained to do new actions just by moving its arms to the correct position and choosing an action. This way, any worker can make the robot useful to themselves or adjust its actions to suit a new environment.

Perhaps most importantly, Baxter fits roughly into a human-sized space and can perform common tasks that once were too trivial for automation ? tasks like adding instruction manuals to boxes,?now done by poorly?paid workers. For an estimated cost of $22,000, a tireless and efficient worker can do the job instead.

Naturally, the objection arises that automation like this eliminates jobs. But Brooks points out that a robot like Baxter makes human workers more efficient and more valuable, not less. And while automation does inevitably replace some workers, that's true of many advances in technology that are a net benefit: many appliances, tools and Internet services used to be humans as well. Remember travel agents?

Brooks isn't sure what Baxter or its descendants will be used for, but he thinks that the empowerment of the average worker will be not just a benefit but a revolution:

I think we're going to see people take this robot, program it to do stuff that we never thought of, never imagined. Out of that will come some new applications that we didn't even consider. And then it gets really exciting.

More information about Baxter can be found at the Rethink Robotics website, and the video below shows the robot in action:

Shuttle to sightsee around Calif. with low flybys

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? Space shuttle Endeavour will spend its last flying day Friday not rocketing into space but doing what most tourists do when visiting California: Taking in the state Capitol, Golden Gate Bridge and the Hollywood Sign.

In what promises to be a crowd-rousing air show, Endeavour, strapped atop a 747 jumbo jet, will take off after sunrise from Edwards Air Force Base in the Mojave Desert and dip low over various landmarks in a 4 1/2-hour sightseeing flight before landing at the Los Angeles International Airport.

It's Endeavour's last aerial hurrah before it spends its retirement years as a museum piece.

Some 400 trees had to be cleared along the 12-mile route to make room for its trek from LAX, a move that has riled some residents in affected neighborhoods. Museum officials have pledged to replant double the number of chopped trees.

"We're so excited to be welcoming Endeavour home in grand style with these flyovers," said Jeffrey Rudolph, president of the California Science Center, where the shuttle will go on permanent display.

Since Endeavour will buzz by some of the Golden State's most iconic sights, law enforcement and transportation authorities warned motorists not to "gawk and drive."

"We want people to take in this majestic show," Los Angeles police Cmdr. Scott Kroeber said earlier this week. "But if you're driving, please drive and don't try to take in the show simultaneously."

Extra officers will be on duty along the freeways near LAX to make sure traffic flows smoothly as the shuttle zooms overhead.

Endeavour returned to its birthplace Thursday after an emotional cross-country ferry flight that made a special flyover of Tucson, Ariz., to honor its last commander, Mark Kelly, and his wife, former Arizona Rep. Gabrielle Giffords.

Giffords, who is recovering from a gunshot wound to the head, was "hooting and hollering" as Endeavour looped around her hometown, according to her former aide C.J. Karamargin.

NASA's shuttle fleet, which retired last year after three decades of flight, was assembled in Palmdale near Edwards Air Force Base. The military outpost 100 miles north of Los Angeles served as the original shuttle landing strip and remained a backup site in case of stormy weather at Cape Canaveral, Fla.

The youngest shuttle, Endeavour replaced Challenger, which blew up during liftoff in 1986. NASA lost another shuttle, Columbia, in 2003 when it disintegrated during re-entry. Fourteen astronauts were killed.

During 25 missions, Endeavour spent 299 days in space and orbited Earth nearly 4,700 times, racking up 123 million miles.

On its maiden flight in 1992, a trio of spacewalking astronauts grabbed a stranded communications satellite in for repair. It also flew the first repair mission to the Hubble Space Telescope to fix a faulty mirror. But most of its flights ferried cargo and equipment to the International Space Station, which is near completion.

Under White House orders to explore beyond low-Earth orbit, NASA is hitching rides on Russian rockets to the orbiting laboratory until private companies can provide regular service.

Endeavour is the second of three remaining shuttles to head to its retirement home. In April, Discovery arrived at the Smithsonian Institution's hangar in Virginia. Atlantis, which closed out the shuttle program, will stay in Florida where it will be towed a short distance to the Kennedy Space Center's visitor center in the fall.

Endeavour will remain at an airport hangar for several weeks as crews ready the shuttle for its own road trip. Unlike Atlantis, it will creep through city streets to the California Science Center near downtown.

Should Students Take Out Payday Loans? | Personal Finance Blog ...

Payday loans are increasingly being used by students who are short on cash. Rent payments, costs of living, money for books and other study essentials can sometimes come as a surprise mid way through the university term.

Taking a payday loan has become an option for students who have had their bursaries and other funding cut by their universities. Payday lending could be considered as a way of encouraging students not to take out student loans but to use payday loans instead. Student loans often full short of the true cost of studying.

Learning to budget

Finding part time work might be an option for many, but for some courses it seriously eats into the time available for studying and fully engaging with the course. Most universities will recommend that students take on no more than 15 or 20 hours of work per week. This is usually low paid casual work like bar work, telephone marketing and retail hours.

Payday loans are generally considered safe if you can responsibly pay back the money within the time stated. There is a worry that students could use the money to pay for un-ed non-essentials, like clothing, entertainment and holidays. Students have a reputation for being poor at handling money and having a limited understanding of financial matters.

Ask your university for financial help and advice

Most universities will have a financial advice department, so be sure to visit these advisors before taking any steps towards taking out a short or long term loan. It?s good to review your budgeting skills and see whether you?re experiencing serious financial shortfall that can?t be avoided or ply spending beyond your means.

?Average student spend on education

The average student will spend upwards of ?15,000 per year on fees and living expenses combined, so it?s really important to carefully plan for unforeseen costs as well as the expected living expenses. There can range from repair costs for broken or stolen equipment, to fines and unexpected costs associated with studying such as field trips and expensive reading material. Many universities also offer short term emergency bursaries or loans to help out struggling students, so it?s worth investigating student hardship funds as an option. Other students are too ashamed to or unable to turn to their families for extra financial support when things go wrong.

A?payday loan?is a convenient option but everyone is different and it?s important to really consider whether this may be the best option for you. Be careful of running late with repayments and spending more than you can afford in the long term.

Libya offers further apology for U.S. envoy's death

TRIPOLI (Reuters) - Libya apologized on Thursday to visiting U.S. Deputy Secretary of State William Burns for an attack on the U.S. consulate in Benghazi in which American ambassador Christopher Stevens died.

Burns was holding talks in Tripoli with Libyan leaders including new Prime Minister Mustafa Abu Shagour and Mohammed Magarief, head of the national congress, following last week's assault, in which three other Americans were also killed.

He was also due to attend a ceremony commemorating Stevens.

Foreign Minister Ashour Bin Khayyal apologized for the violence on Tripoli's behalf, praising Stevens as a "friend of Libya", a foreign ministry official said.

The four Americans died when gunmen attacked the consulate and a safe house in the eastern city of Benghazi. The attackers were among a crowd protesting against a video made in California that mocks Islam and the Prophet Mohammad.

"We do agree, Libyans and Americans that it is absolutely essential and urgent to bring those responsible for this horrible tragedy to justice just as quickly as possible and we're determined to work together to ensure that that happens,' Burns told reporters in Tripoli.

"This is a shared loss, a terrible tragedy," he added. "But it is also a reminder of the importance of renewing the determination of the U.S. to do what Chris Stevens tried so hard to do. And that is to help Libyans realize the premise of the revolution, not allow it to be hijacked by extremists."

VALUES

After meeting Burns, outgoing Libyan Prime Minister Abdurrahim El-Keib said the killing of Stevens was "definitely not representative of the moral values that we have here in Libya".

He said the video was "distasteful" and "does not reflect the feeling of the American people".

Matthew Olsen, director of the U.S. government's National Counterterrorism Center, on Wednesday called the Benghazi assault a terrorist attack and said officials were looking at whether those involved had links to al Qaeda, particularly its North African affiliate, al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb.

The Libyan foreign ministry official said Burns and Bin Khayyal had discussed U.S. involvement in the investigation, as well as broader security and economic cooperation.

Magarief, who apologized last week "to the United States, the people and the whole world" for the Benghazi attack, also agreed in a telephone call with U.S. President Barack Obama that their countries would work together to investigate it.

Libya sacked its security chiefs for Benghazi after the attack and another official, tasked with employing militia fighters in the police in the east of the country, said on Thursday he had resigned because recruits were not being paid or supplied adequately.

Libya's interim government has struggled to impose its authority on a myriad armed groups that have refused to lay down their weapons since last year's overthrow of Muammar Gaddafi. The fighters often take the law into their own hands.

Doubts arise over claims for 'Jesus' Wife' papyrus

Is a scrap of papyrus suggesting that Jesus had a wife authentic?

Scholars on Wednesday questioned the much-publicized discovery by a Harvard scholar who said a fourth-century fragment of papyrus provided the first evidence that some early Christians believed Jesus was married.

And experts in the illicit antiquities trade also wondered about the motive of the fragment's anonymous owner, noting that the document's value has likely increased amid the publicity of the still-unproven find.

Karen King, a professor of early Christianity at Harvard Divinity School, announced the finding on Tuesday at an international congress on Coptic studies in Rome. The text, written in Coptic and probably translated from a second-century Greek text, contains a dialogue in which Jesus refers to "my wife," whom he identifies as Mary.

King's paper, and the front-page attention it received in some newspapers that got advance word about it, was a hot topic of conversation at the conference on Wednesday.

Christian tradition has long held that Jesus was unmarried, although there is no reliable historical evidence to support that, King said. Any evidence pointing to whether Jesus was married or had a female disciple could have ripple effects in current debates over the role of women in the church.

'Not completely convincing'
Stephen Emmel, a professor of Coptology at the University of Muenster who was on the international advisory panel that reviewed the 2006 discovery of the Gospel of Judas, said the text accurately quotes Jesus as saying "my wife." But he questioned whether the document was authentic.

"There's something about this fragment in its appearance and also in the grammar of the Coptic that strikes me as being not completely convincing somehow," he said in an interview on the sidelines of the conference.

Another participant at the congress, Alin Suciu, a papyrologist at the University of Hamburg, was more blunt.

"I would say it's a forgery. The script doesn't look authentic" when compared to other samples of Coptic papyrus script dated to the fourth century, he said.

King acknowledged Wednesday that questions remain about the fragment, and she welcomed the feedback from her colleagues. She said she planned to subject the document to ink tests to determine if the chemical components match those used in antiquity.

"We still have some work to do, testing the ink and so on and so forth, but what is exciting about this fragment is that it's the first case we have of Christians claiming that Jesus had a wife," she said.

She stressed that the text, assuming it's authentic, doesn't provide any historical evidence that Jesus was actually married ? only evidence that some two centuries after he died, some early Christians believed he had a wife.

Context lacking
Wolf-Peter Funk, a noted Coptic linguist, said there was no way to evaluate the significance of the fragment because it has no context. It's a partial text and tiny, measuring 4 centimeters by 8 centimeters (1.5 inches by 3 inches), about the size of a small cellphone.

"There are thousands of scraps of papyrus where you find crazy things," said Funk, co-director of a project editing the Nag Hammadi Coptic library at Laval University in Quebec. "It can be anything."

He, too, doubted the authenticity, saying the form of the fragment was "suspicious."

Ancient papyrus fragments have been frequently cut up by unscrupulous antiquities dealers seeking to make more money.

An anonymous collector brought King the fragment in December 2011, seeking her help in translating and understanding it. In March, she brought it to two papyrologists who determined it was very likely authentic.

On Tuesday, Harvard Divinity School announced the finding to great fanfare and said King's paper would be published in January's Harvard Theological Review. Harvard said that the fragment most likely came from Egypt, and that its earliest documentation is from the early 1980s indicating that a now-deceased professor in Germany thought it evidence of a possible marriage of Jesus.

Financial interest?
Some archaeologists were quick to question Harvard's ethics, noting that the fragment has no known provenance, or history of where it's been, and that its current owner may have a financial interest in the publicity being generated about it.

King has said the owner wants to sell his collection to Harvard.

"There are all sorts of really dodgy things about this," said David Gill, professor of archaeological heritage at University Campus Suffolk and author of the Looting Matters blog, which closely follows the illicit trade in antiquities. "This looks to me as if any sensible, responsible academic would keep their distance from it."

He cited the ongoing debate in academia over publishing articles about possibly dubiously obtained antiquities, thus potentially fueling the illicit market.

The Archaeological Institute of America, for example, won't publish articles in its journal announcing the discovery of antiquities without a proven provenance that were acquired after a UNESCO convention fighting the illicit trade went into effect in 1973.

Similarly, many American museums have adopted policies to no longer acquire antiquities without a provenance, after being slapped with successful efforts by countries like Italy to reclaim looted treasures.

Archaeologists also complain that the looting of antiquities removes them from their historical context, depriving scholars of a wealth of information.

Problems with papyrus
However, AnneMarie Luijendijk, the Princeton University expert whom King consulted to authenticate the papyrus, said the fragment fit all the rules and criteria established by the International Association of Papyrologists. She noted that papyrus fragments frequently don't have a provenance, simply because so many were removed from Egypt before such issues were of concern.

She acknowledged the dilemma about buying such antiquities but said refraining from publishing articles about them is another matter.

"You wouldn't let an important new text go to waste," she said.

Hany Sadak, the director general of the Coptic Museum in Cairo, said the fragment's existence was unknown to Egypt's antiquities authorities until news articles this week.

"I personally think, as a researcher, that the paper is not authentic because it was, if it had been in Egypt before, we would have known of it and we would have heard of it before it left Egypt," he said.
