Top Real Estate Stories | Hurricane Sandy | Barclays Center

From left: WTC, ?the cast of MDLNY (top), the dangling crane atop One57 (bottom) and Barclays Center.

In 2012, One57 rose, and Dewey & LeBoeuf collapsed. The World Trade Center topped out, and Manhattan Apartments bottomed out. The Barclays Center brought stars to Brooklyn, and Bravo TV made celebrities of a trio of telegenic brokers. ?Read on for our choices for the top 10 real estate stories of the year.

Hurricane Sandy packs a punch

The so-called ?superstorm? that bore down on New York City in the early morning hours of October 29 killed more than 100 people along the Eastern seaboard ??43 in New York City alone ??damaged or destroyed nearly 400,000 homes in the tri-state area, and left millions without power and basic services. Hurricane Sandy also dealt an unprecedented blow to the city?s public infrastructure ? causing the longest weather-related shutdown in the history of the subway system. Parts of Staten Island and the Rockaways were among the city?s hardest hit residential neighborhoods. And in Lower Manhattan, Sandy shuttered as much as 35 million square feet of downtown office space. Six weeks on, some 11 million square feet of downtown office remained closed, according to figures compiled by the real estate services firm Jones Lang Lasalle. (Despite the flooding experienced in New York?s coastal neighborhoods, Mayor Bloomberg remains a proponent of developing the city?s waterfront.) Among the most enduring images of the storm: the crane that was being used to build Extell?s luxury residential tower One57 ? broken and dangling precariously above Midtown.

One57 launches sales

Not since architect Robert A.M. Stern?s neoclassical tower rose at 15 Central Park West has an apartment building created such a buzz. But One57, the glassy condo tower going up at 157 West 57th Street, is poised to become as instantly iconic as its limestone neighbor. Designed by the Pritzker Prize-winning architect Christian de Portzamparc, the Extell Development project overlooking Central Park has been billed as a ?billionaires? club,? due to the sheer number of building buyers who rank among the world?s wealthiest individuals. In February, Extell launched sales, and there are reportedly now more than $1 billion worth of condominiums currently under contract at One57. The two penthouses ? one 11,000-square-foot apartment on the highest floor and another, even larger unit with a glass-screened terrace a few floors below ? are both under contract for upward of $90 million, making them the priciest New York City homes ever sold. The building?s first 30 stories will be a Park Hyatt Hotel. The 60 top floors will be luxury condos, which are expected to begin closing late next year, Real estate observers said they do not expect that the high-profile crane collapse at the construction site to deter buyers.

Barclays Center opens

Brooklyn hadn?t had a major league sports team since 1957, when the Dodgers decamped for Los Angeles. But the Barclays Center, an 18,000-square-foot SHoP Architects-designed arena that opened in September in Prospect Heights changed that. The Nets, the NBA team formerly of New Jersey, opened their season at Barclays as the rebranded Brooklyn Nets. And in October, the NHL?s Islanders announced that they would be moving to the borough, from Long Island, in 2015. The arena, a major component of Forest City Ratner?s long-awaited Atlantic Yards project, gives the city another large concert venue; Jay-Z, Barbra Streisand and Leonard Cohen have all performed there since it opened. And already, real estate brokers have reported the stadium influencing demand for retail space in the surrounding area. Late this year, ground was broken nearby on Atlantic Yards? first residential tower, which will rise 32 stories and house 181 below-market-rate units and 182 market-rate apartments.? The developer plans to use modular construction on the 11 residential buildings planned for the site.

1 WTC tops out

For years after the September 11 terrorist attacks, ground zero was little more than a hole, quite literally, in the heart of Lower Manhattan. But the site where nearly 2,800 people died in the worst terrorist attack on American soil is coming back to life. The centerpiece of the site?s glassy new towers is 1 World Trade Center, which rises a symbolic 1,776 square feet. The building topped out in August, and its 408-foot spire was lifted to the top of the building in December. Leasing at the World Trade Center complex was generally slower this year than it was in 2011, when the publishing giant Cond? Nast signed for 1.1 million square feet at 1 World Trade Center. The most notable World Trade Center lease this year was that of the U.S. General Services Administration, which in July inked a deal for 270,000 square feet ? a long-stalled agreement that brings the 1 World Trade to more than 50 percent full. Read The Real Deal?s comprehensive report on World Trade Center leasing here.

?Million-Dollar Listing New York? premieres

The network that transformed housewives into ?Housewives? is turning New York real estate agents into celebrities, too. Bravo?s ?Million Dollar Listing New York,? premiered March 7, and almost immediately turned Nest Seekers International?s Ryan Serhant, and Douglas Elliman?s Fredrik Eklund and Michael Lorber into stars. The first season followed the telegenic salespeople as they navigated Manhattan?s luxury real estate market ? the demanding clients, the competition for listings and the challenges of selling apartments in a building that is still under construction. The show hasn?t just raised the agents? profiles; it?s increased the demand for their real estate services, forcing them to grow their teams and hire on new agents. Bravo has green-lit a second season of the show. It will star Serhant, Eklund and, for the first time, Keller Williams NYC?s Luis D. Ortiz; Lorber, the son of Elliman Chairman Howard Lorber, will not appear in the second season, sources told The Real Deal.

Manhattan Apartments shuttered

Nearly three decades after it was founded, Manhattan Apartments, long one of New York City?s largest rental brokerages,?shut its doors this year. At its peak, the company had some 250 agents. Its closure comes after years of financial and legal troubles for the Midtown-based firm, founded and run by the charismatic Jerry Weinstein. By late this year, though, sources told The Real Deal that Weinstein?s company hadn?t paid agents in months and that it ?owes millions? to other firms and to its former salespeople. Manhattan Apartments? remaining agents were offered spots at another rental-focused brokerage, AC Lawrence ? a division of the Bellmarc Group. In addition, AC Lawrence took over the 11,000-square-foot lease at the former Manhattan Apartments headquarters, located at 729 Seventh Avenue, near Times Square. AC Lawrence?s decision to take on Manhattan Apartments? agents and space ends a long-running legal dispute between the two companies over a business relationship gone bad. On Dec. 12, The Real Deal broke the story of Manhattan Apartments? closure.

666 Fifth Avenue retail trades for $707 million

Five years after the Kushner Companies paid $1.8 billion for the office tower at 666 Fifth Avenue, the company in July sold the building?s remaining retail condo to Vornado Realty Trust for a whopping $707 million. That sale came about a year after the Spanish fashion company Inditex paid $324 million for the building?s other retail condo. While the Kushner Companies, which owns 51 percent of 666 Fifth, is thought to have made up to $120 million in the Vornado retail sale, the office portion of the building has accrued operating losses of $200 million, an analysis by The Real Deal showed. In August, The Real Deal published a scorecard of who won and who lost in the Vornado retail deal, as well as a timeline of major developments at the property since its 2007 sale to Kushner.

City plans Midtown East rezoning

The Bloomberg administration wants more office towers near Grand Central Terminal. In a move that could transform the city?s skyline, the Department of City Planning in July unveiled a proposal to rezone portions of Midtown East. Under the plan hailed by the Real Estate Board of New York and viewed with skepticism by some preservationists, developers could build taller and bulkier structures than is currently permitted. Earlier this month, office landlord SL Green unveiled renderings of its planned 1.6-million-square-foot office tower in the neighborhood, 1 Vanderbilt. As The Real Deal reported, the rezoning would require larger developers to negotiate complex deals with smaller firms in order to assemble parcels with a large enough footprint on which to build.

Domino Sugar factory trades hands

Two Trees Management, the firm known for bringing luxury housing and cachet to Dumbo, reached a deal in June to purchase the former Domino Sugar refinery along the Williamsburg waterfront for $185 million. CPC Resources sold the 11-acre property, eight years after it bought it with the intention of building a $1.4 billion mixed-use development that included hundreds of affordable housing units. Two Trees is reportedly seeking major design changes to CPC?s proposal, and the company has yet to say the extent to which its plans would include affordable housing. The developer, which owns or manages some $3 billion in residential and commercial properties, according to Crain?s, recently began meeting with community members to get feedback on the site?s redevelopment.

Dewey & LeBoeuf files for bankruptcy

In May, hundreds of millions in debt, Dewey & LeBoeuf ? once a major force in New York real estate law ? filed for bankruptcy. Its Chapter 11 filing marked a dramatic end for the firm, which at its peak employed some 1,400 lawyers, including dozens in its real estate practice. Even before the bankruptcy, there were signs of trouble. Nearly all of its real estate attorneys, including Stuart Saft, the prominent head of its global real estate practice, had left the company for other firms. Dewey?s downfall, sources told The Real Deal, was its practice of recruiting new partners with guaranteed seven-figure salaries; when the economy tanked and transaction volume declined, that payroll proved unsustainable. The firm had nearly 500,000 square feet at 1301 Sixth Avenue; some of that space has since been leased by the law firms Chadbourne & Park and Fragomen.

Other major stories in 2012:

Hudson Yards breaks ground on its first tower; the leather purveyor Coach will be that building?s anchor tenant. ? Construction began at 432 Park, which when completed will eclipse One57 tallest residential tower. Ekatarina Rybolovleva, the daughter of a Russian billionaire, closed on Sanford Weill?s $88 million 15 Central Park West apartment? 18 Gramercy Park marks another success for the developers behind 15 Central Park West. ? ?In the closely watched Brompton case, an appeals court interprets the Interstate Land Sales Disclosure Act in favor of the Related Companies. ? A block from One57, Extell plans another major residential tower, where New York City could get its first Nordstom ? New York Attorney General takes legal action against the former National Arts Club head. ? Rushmore buyers receive some $15 million in payouts before escrow agent stopped payment. ? New York City gets its first $100 million apartment listing.

I've had sinus & allergy problems all my life; my doc 1ce told me sinus problems are common in this part of Louisiana. I've moved to Vermont a couple months ago & my sinus problems got a lot better there. I came back down to spend the holidays with my family & my sinus problems are coming back with a vengeance; I think I must of built up some kind of tolerance & I lost that by being gone for a while. My sinuses have gradually been getting worse sense I've been back. My nose is running aLOT, I'm sneezing some, my eyes are getting watery & itchy at times, I had a sinus headache for a bit yesterday with sinus pressure, I also started occasionally coughing, spitting up a little stuff & feeling a little itchy. I started taking Allegra. It helps some but the improvement only last for like 8 hours instead of lasting for 24 like it's supposed to & the amount of improvement for those 8 hours isn't huge. My doc gave me some samples of Zyrtec a few months ago when I was seeing him for something else & Zyrtec didn't help me a lot either. I've been on various other over the counter & also prescription sinus & allergy meds in the past. I don't remember getting a lot of improvement from any 2nd generation antihistamines; I don't think they are powerful enough for me. Benadryl makes me a little hyper & I don't think I get a great improvement with that either. The only meds I know that have helped me a lot were oral prescription steroid things. I'll be heading back to Vermont in another week so I think I should try another med to hold me over till then. Could anyone suggest something that isn't a 2nd generation antihistamine; perhaps a 1st gen one or an oral steroid(if there's anything like that available without a prescription) or something else Question

Rare genetic faults identified in families with bowel cancer

Dec. 30, 2012 ? Rare DNA faults in two genes have been strongly linked to bowel cancer by Oxford University researchers, who sequenced the genomes of people from families with a strong history of developing the disease.

The researchers sequenced the entire DNA genomes of 20 people from families with a strong history of bowel cancer. Eight of the 20 people had developed bowel cancer, while the rest had a first-degree relative who had developed the disease. The findings are published in the journal Nature Genetics.

They found that everyone who had a faulty POLE or POLD1 gene developed bowel cancer or had a precancerous growth in the bowel.

To confirm their findings they then looked for faults in these two genes in almost 4,000 people with bowel cancer, and 6,700 people without the disease.

Neither of the genetic faults was found in people without bowel cancer. However, 12 people with a fault in the POLE gene were found in the bowel cancer group, and one person had a POLD1 gene fault.

The POLD1 fault was also found to increase the risk of getting womb cancer and possibly brain cancer, with seven people in the study being diagnosed with womb cancer and one developing two brain tumours.

Professor Ian Tomlinson, who led the research at the Wellcome Trust Centre for Human Genetics at Oxford University, said: 'These are two rare faults, but if you inherit them your chance of bowel cancer is high. By testing people with a strong family history of the disease for these, we can identify those who are at high risk and try to prevent the disease by using colonoscopy and other methods.'

POLE and POLD1 are genes involved in processes that repair damage to DNA. Without these genes functioning properly, affected individuals can build up damage in their DNA which accumulates and it is thought this may lead to changes that cause bowel cancer.

'This research highlights how much more we still have to find out about the rare gene faults that can increase a person's risk of bowel cancer,' said Dr Julie Sharp, senior science information manager at Cancer Research UK, which part-funded the work.

Hair Structure

Hair Structure

Hair Structure

Human hair consists of proteins, lipids, water, trace elements and pigments. Depending on its moisture content (up to 32% by weight), human hair, consists of approximately 65% to 95% proteins. Proteins are condensation polymers of amino acids. Hair is composed of 97 percent keratin, the same protein that makes up nails and the outer layer of our skin. The main elements that make up human hair are carbon, oxygen, hydrogen, nitrogen and sulfur. For hair loss, the most significant component is the dermal papilla. The dermal papilla contains blood and nerve supply that provides nutrients needed for hair growth.

Identify Reasons of Hair Thinning

Hair Thinning

Hair Thinning

Androgenic Alopecia is frequent cause of hair loss. This results in smallness of hair, changing it into soft silky hair, similar to the hair on your hands. Hair Thinning and Hair Loss may be the outcome of combination or one of the following:-

  • Genetics
  • Age
  • Hormonal changes
  • An unhealthy diet may also contribute to hair loss.
  • Blood circulation plays an important role in hair thinning. If the dermal papilla is not receiving enough blood supply, the hair follicle dies and can never grow back.
  • Hair thinning is caused by lack of circulation in the scalp. If treated early on, hair loss may be prolonged and even prevented.
  • Chemical relaxers and other styling methods can cause hair thinning and breakage.
  • Lack of protein,
  • Stress
  • Illness
  • Pregnancy
  • Medications

Vitamins and Minerals for Hair Growth

Now you understand hair structure and reasons of thinning, you can decide how to overcome the dilemma. Vitamins helpful for strong hair are as follows:-

  • Vitamin B Niacin is a type of Vitamin B, it helps the body in many areas, including the digestive system, skin and the nervous system.
  • Vitamin B12 is necessary for the synthesis of red blood cells and is an option. Cayenne is known to increase blood circulation. with
  • Vitamin B-6 Helps your hair stay strong
  • Biotin. ?Biotin helps with the metabolism of fatty acids in the hair, which improves new cell growth and creation.
  • Folic acid. ?Iron can also help hair growth by carrying oxygen to the hair.
  • Beta-carotene
  • Zinc ?helps to build hair protein and prevent hair loss.
  • Vitamin C

Tips to Stop Hair Thinning and Hair Loss

Fruits

Fruits

  • A typical multivitamin is great for your hair and body as a whole.
  • Folic acid is identified to make your hair much healthier along with your nails and skin.
  • Take biotin supplements or eat foods, such as yeast, liver, eggs, green peas and peanuts that are rich in biotin. A deficiency in biotin can cause the hair to become thin and grow slowly.
  • Vitamin E is found naturally in vegetable oils, dark leafy greens, liver, eggs and nuts. Vitamin E also helps increase the growth of capillaries and improve circulation to the scalp.
  • Eating iron-rich foods, such as broccoli, spinach and kale, can help reverse some forms of hair loss.
  • Vitamin C contains collagen, which is a structural fiber found in hair follicles and skin. The best foods for vitamin C include guava, bell peppers, cantaloupe, orange juice and mustard greens.
  • Vitamin B carries oxygen and nutrients to the scalp and follicles. Foods rich in vitamin B include whole grain breakfast cereals, shellfish and wild salmon.
  • Soy is also known to increase the strength and elasticity of hair
  • Applying vitamin E to hair can help heal the hair shafts.
  • A scalp massage can do marvels for blood circulation.
  • Many professional shampoos and conditioners already contain the vitamins and minerals necessary for hair loss prevention.

Fuel Fix ? Forecast shows more hybrids, electric vehicles in 2013

(AP Photo/Chuck Burton)

Six new hybrid vehicle models and eight more plug-ins ?will be offered in auto showrooms in 2013 compared to this year, according to automotive forecaster Alan Baum.

In a recent report released with the Natural Resources Defense Council, Baum noted that the selection of alternative-fuel and hybrid vehicles is continuing to expand, even as traditional gasoline-powered cars become more efficient. Even large cars and trucks are getting more miles per gallon of fuel, he said.

?We may not think of the pickup segment in regard to fuel economy, but that?s just what?s?occurring,? Baum said, noting that Chrysler introduced a more fuel efficient version of its Ram this year.

?The automakers are literally in an all-of-the-above strategy,? he said. ?If you want a pickup truck, fine. If you want a little car, fine. If you want a hybrid or electric, that?s OK, too.?

From ?2009 to 2013, the number of hybrid vehicle models offered will have doubled to 50 and the number of plug-ins will have jumped from one to 28, said Luke Tonachel of the Natural Resources Defense Council.

Baum said plug-in Honda Accords and Ford Fusions are on the horizon. A Volkswagen Jetta hybrid emerged this year and the Nissan Altima hybrid will appear in 2013, he added.?And there?s a?drive toward offering other fuel-saving technologies, like stop-start ability.

More diesel-powered?vehicles?also are being offered on the U.S. market, generally offering better fuel mileage than their gasoline counterparts, Baum noted.

Automakers? move away from gas guzzlers mean $2.50 a gallon gasoline has become their worst nightmare, he added.

?They have committed their companies to this path and that obviously will be more difficult if gasoline becomes cheap,? he said. ?The people who are buying cars are willing to spend more money and ?understand there is a cost for this new technology, but a payback as well.?

The price of gasoline has been in steep decline since August, dropping to a national average as low as $3.21. Meanwhile, vehicles traveled ?more than a mile farther per gallon in 2012 compared to 2011, Baum said. Between vehicle model years 2012 and 2013, fuel economy will climb another 0.8 percent, he added.

Still, Baum doesn?t expect to see a dramatic change in consumer behavior toward auto sales.

?I don?t think they are at the point where they think this is the norm,? he said of drivers. ?The consumers and automakers continue to believe that the long-term trend for fuel prices is high.?

APNewsBreak: Sen. Crapo won't fight DUI charge

Authorities say Crapo has been arrested and charged with driving under the influence Sunday, Dec. 23, 2012 in a Washington, D.C. suburb. (AP Photo/Matt Cilley, File)

(AP) ? U.S. Sen. Michael Crapo, the Idaho Republican arrested on suspicion of drunken driving, doesn't plan to fight the charges when he appears in court in January, a spokesman said Friday.

Meanwhile, results from a secondary blood alcohol test performed at the jail show the conservative three-term senator registered a higher level about an hour after being arrested than when he was first tested by the police officer who stopped him.

Police have said Crapo registered a blood alcohol level of 0.11 percent when he was pulled over early Sunday in the Washington suburb of Alexandria, Va., after running a red light. But a secondary test performed after Crapo was brought to the jailhouse ? the one that will be used in court ? registered at 0.14, nearly twice the legal limit, according to a law enforcement official with knowledge of the arrest. The official wasn't authorized to release information publicly and spoke on condition of anonymity.

"He does not plan to contest the charges," said Crapo spokesman Lindsay Nothern, adding that Crapo has consulted with a local Virginia attorney ahead of his Jan. 4 court hearing.

Nothern confirmed there had been a discrepancy in the blood alcohol tests, but said he was uncertain why they differed.

A blood alcohol level of 0.14 means Crapo tested 1/100 of a percentage point below the level that would have mandated jail time under Virginia law. The legal limit in Virginia, which has strict drunken driving laws, is 0.08 percent.

Crapo has apologized and taken responsibility for the incident in a statement, but he hasn't spoken publicly about the arrest. Crapo returned to Washington from Idaho on Wednesday as lawmakers pursue a solution to the looming fiscal cliff, but he wasn't immediately available to comment Friday.

A number of factors could explain the discrepancy between the preliminary breathalyzer test, performed on the street when Crapo was pulled over shortly after midnight, and the jailhouse test, conducted just before 2 a.m. The higher level at the jailhouse could indicate Crapo was drinking shortly before getting behind the wheel and his body was still absorbing the alcohol. But another possible explanation is that blood alcohol testing simply isn't a perfect science, said Michael Hlastala, a breath testing expert and former physiology professor at the University of Washington.

"It could be consistent with rising blood alcohol levels," Hlastala said. "But it just depends on the way the person was breathing, and other factors."

Alexandria police say Crapo was alone in his vehicle when he ran a red light, was pulled over and failed field sobriety tests. He was taken to the Alexandria jail and released on an unsecured $1,000 bond about 5 a.m. Sunday. Crapo is scheduled to appear in court on Jan. 4 ? the day after the start of the next Congress. Crapo was handily re-elected in 2010 and won't have to run again until 2016.

It's still not clear where Crapo was coming from when he was arrested, and the senator hasn't explained the circumstances of the arrest. Court records show Crapo residing in Southeast Washington, a short drive over the Potomac River from the historic suburb where he was arrested.

The 61-year-old's arrest two days before Christmas stunned colleagues and constituents alike, not only because of his squeaky-clean image but also because the senator, a Mormon, had said previously he abstains from alcohol, in accordance with his church's practices.

Many of Crapo's Republican colleagues, including Sen. Jim Risch, Idaho's senior senator, have come to his defense, suggesting Crapo can overcome the indiscretion and remain a viable leader. Crapo's home-state newspaper, the Idaho Statesman, ran an editorial with the headline: "We can all learn from Sen. Crapo's mistake."

Survey finds increase in e-reading, drop in paper

(AP) ? The tastes of the reading public are turning digital.

A Pew Internet Research Center survey released Thursday found that the percentage of Americans aged 16 and older who read an e-book grew from 16 percent in 2011 to 23 percent this year. Readers of traditional books dropped from 72 percent to 67 percent. Overall, those reading books of any kind dropped from 78 percent to 75 percent, a shift Pew called statistically insignificant.

Those owning an e-book device or tablet jumped from 18 percent to 33 percent, with much of that increase coming from last year's holiday season, when millions received Kindles, Nooks and other e-readers as gifts.

Awareness that libraries offer digital texts grew from 24 percent to 31 percent.

The telephone survey of 2,252 people aged 16 and older was conducted from Oct. 15 to Nov. 10. It has a sampling error margin of plus or minus 2.3 percentage points.

C. Dianne Zweig - Kitsch 'n Stuff: Why Should Antiques And ...

Linking Your Blog With Other Antiques And Collectibles Blogs ??

Today is a perfect day to do a bit more blogging (snowed in). ?I racked up quite a lot of blogging hours this past year and will continue to share many more posts in the months to come. For awhile, I was totally frustrated with the way Blogger was operating. Posting a blog had become a tedious task.

But now, I believe the Blogger bugs have been fixed and blogging has become enjoyable again. My blog readers contine to grow and I am slowly ?and carefully increasing my blog link exchanges.

Exchanging Blog Links Is Good Business

When I am poking around Pinterest.com I am amazed at how many wonderful blogs there are that I am just learning about. In the spirit of more is better than less, ?I am interested in finding new blogs to exchange links with. For newbies that means that I want to add your to my blog roll ?(link exchange) and hope that you would add me to yours (reciprocal link). ?Many very popular blogs do not seem to have visible blog rolls, yet they still have thousands of followers. ?I'm really very techy deliquent despite what many of you think, but I can tell you that it's a very important idea to have link exchanges with others.

Why Websites Want More Links?

Here is what Deb Perlman of the Food Blog Alliance says about links:

Why websites want more links :

Google* uses "link popularity", or the number of links going to a page, to help it rank the relevance of sites. The more links going on your site, the higher your page rank potential. The
more page rank you have, the more likely your site is to come up on the first page of Google search results when someone looks for something that yur site has. The closer your site is to the top of the Google search results ?the more traffic. Google sends you, and if you have ads on your site, those additional clicks generate additinal income.

Choosing Who To Exchange Blog Links With

I do want to mention that you should take care about who you decide to exchange links with. Since my blog is about retro, vintage, collectibles, funky, antiques, Mixed Media....I exchange links with similar blogs. I also review carefully who I am linking with. I would also suggest that you put your effort into exchanging links with bloggers who are active and who are making a big effort to grow their blog followers. But, of course you may be obkligated to exchange links with friends in the business or others who maybe sleepy bloggers but have important content that you want to share.?

Share Your Blog Link Ideas

My readers arre welcome to share their experinces and ideas about exchanging links. I'd love to know what some of the biggest blogs do not have link exchanges? Anyone care to offer some insight?

Samsung confirms multi-window feature and Jelly Bean update for original Galaxy Note

Samsung confirms multiwindow feature and Jelly Bean update for original Galaxy Note

That previously-spotted Premium Suite upgrade for the Galaxy Note is on its way, with Samsung revealing all the details on its site. With a refreshed UI appears very similar to its successor, the respectable Android slab will also lay claim to Air View, Multi-window apps and the addictive easy clip function that allows you to crop and share images and text with the stylus. Thanks to that Jelly Bean update, owners of Samsung's original phablet can also start dabbling with Google Now, which will continue to pluck information from your search history, location and timezone. There's no word yet on when the refreshed Premium suite will find its way onto devices anywhere, but with Samsung already singing the update's praises, it shouldn't be far away.

Jobless claims fall to lowest level in nearly five years

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. consumer confidence fell more than expected in December, hitting a four-month low as a looming fiscal crisis sapped what had been a growing sense of optimism about the economy.

The report heightened concerns that a failure by Washington to avert planned tax hikes and spending cuts could lead households to close their wallets, threatening an economic recovery that has been steady albeit lackluster.

Other data on Thursday highlighted the positive momentum building in the economy, with the number of Americans filing new claims for jobless benefits falling to a nearly 4-1/2 year low and new home sales hitting their highest level since April 2010.

But gauges of business sentiment have weakened recently on worries Washington will go forward with plans to slash the federal deficit by about $600 billion in 2013.

Now consumers also appear apprehensive, a sign worries about the so-called "fiscal cliff" could bite into household spending.

The Conference Board, an industry group, said its index of consumer attitudes fell to 65.1 from 71.5 in November.

A sub-index measuring how consumers feel about their present situation rose to its highest level in more than four years, but a gauge of sentiment about the future plunged to its lowest point in more than a year.

"Consumers are increasingly preoccupied with the potential damage the fiscal cliff will cause to the economy and to their wallets if a deal is not reached soon," economists at RBS in Stamford, Connecticut, wrote in a research note.

Separately, the Labor Department said initial claims for state unemployment benefits dropped 12,000 last week to a seasonally adjusted 350,000, the Labor Department said.

"This recent improvement in the claims data is potentially a favorable signal for the labor market," said Daniel Silver, an economist at JPMorgan in New York.

After spiking in the wake of a mammoth storm that ravaged the East Coast in late October, new claims have dropped to their lowest levels since the early days of the 2007-09 recession. The four-week moving average fell 11,250 last week to 356,750, the lowest since March 2008.

The claims data has no direct relation to the government's monthly employment report, but it suggests the surge in layoffs since the recession has at least run its course.

Still, many economists think hiring may remain sluggish even as the pace of layoffs ease.

Companies in recent months have been adding to their payrolls at a lackluster pace, and analysts expect the employment report due on January 4 will show 143,000 jobs were created in December, down from 146,000 in November.

"A significant improvement in labor market conditions ahead of any resolution to the fiscal cliff is unlikely," said Michael Gapen, an economist at Barclays in New York.

U.S. stocks opened flat but turned lower as the Senate Democratic leader derided Republicans for the lack of progress in budget talks and warned that a fall off the "cliff" appeared inevitable. Investors sought safety by buying U.S. Treasury debt and the dollar, which rose against the euro.

Following a truncated holiday break in Hawaii, U.S. President Barack Obama returned to Washington to restart talks to avoid the brunt of the fiscal cliff's impact, which would likely put the U.S. economy back into recession if not lessened.

HOLIDAY CAVEAT

The signs of progress in the claims data also included a caveat, at least for the latest week.

Obama declared Monday a holiday for federal workers and many state offices followed suit and were unable to provide complete data for last week's jobless claims. Data for 19 states was estimated, although 14 of those states submitted their own estimates, which tend to be fairly accurate.

The holiday season can make it more difficult to adjust the claims data for normal seasonal fluctuations, another reason to be cautious about the report for last week.

Separately, the Commerce Department said new U.S. single-family home sales rose in November to a 377,000-unit annual rate, while the median sales price jumped 14.9 percent from the same month in 2011, the latest signs the U.S. housing recovery is gaining some steam.

In a fourth report, the Chicago Federal Reserve Bank said its index of factory activity in the U.S. Midwest increased in November to 93.7 from a revised 92.2 in October.

Video of pets opening their Christmas gifts goes viral

Children weren't the only ones ripping open presents on Christmas morning; check out these pets opening their Christmas gifts.
The popularity of YouTube videos showing pets opening Christmas presents should be no surprise seeing that 62 percent of U.S. households have a pet, which equates to 72.9 millions homes, according to the American Pet Products Association (APPA), a trade group. And of those households, a 2011-12 survey by the APPA showed that 53 percent of dog owners and 38 percent of cat owners buy their pets Christmas gifts.

The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports that consumers are expected to spend $52.9 billion on their pets this year, including on holiday gifts. That's up 4% from last year.

Each year, owners can choose among more and more pet products and pet gifts. New trends highlighted by the American Pet Product Association this year take pet grooming to another level. For example, retailers that offer services such as a haircut, a quick bath and a nail trim, now offer the option of mouthwash and an electric toothbrush in a beauty session for some pooches. If your cat needs to relieve stress, look no further than a relaxing soak in a feline spa followed by herbal catnip packaged in a tea bag.

Pets opening presents videos were hot on YouTube Christmas day, so Gawker's Jordan Sargent dug through them and picked out the favorites.

Here's the top two:

In the top spot is Mac, the Puggle, who "just loves unwrapping presents." Mac rips open his gift like a pro:

Now check out Ellie, the pug, opening her first Christmas present of 2012. Ellie even strikes a pose with her gift for her viewers at the end:

Telecommuters Work Longer Hours Than Office-Goers

    60-Second Science

Census stats show that people who work at home at least some of the time put in more hours each week than those who stay at the office. Karen Hopkin reports.

    More 60-Second Science

When I say ?telecommuting,? do you picture yourself easing into the workday in a pair of fuzzy slippers? Well, so does your boss. But the reality is, you?re both dreaming. Because a new study shows that folks who work at home at least some of the time put in more hours than those who stay at the office. That?s according to work published in the journal Monthly Labor Review. [Mary C. Noonan and Jennifer L. Glass, The hard truth about telecommuting]

Telecommuting for a portion of the workweek certain has its appeal. Avoiding the time and cost involved in commuting and presumably having a more flexible schedule and a better work-life balance are all potential pluses. But are employees really able to take advantage of such work-at-home perks?

Researchers took advantage of labor information from census bureau surveys and were surprised by what they found. First off, the proportion of people who work remotely remained unchanged from the mid-?90s to the mid-2000s the most recent data available. Second, those who do telecommute are more likely to work overtime, an additional 5 to 7 hours on top of the standard 40.

Which means that people who work from the comfort of home are not slackers in slippers. They?re more likely tech-savvy self-starters?who don?t know when to stop.

    ?Karen Hopkin

Gloomy predictions as Washington approaches the 'fiscal cliff'

It's still possible that the 'fiscal cliff' with its automatic?tax increases and across-the-board spending cuts can be avoided. But the clock is ticking toward Jan.1, and most lawmakers are pessimistic.

    By Brad Knickerbocker,?Staff writer / December 23, 2012

President Barack Obama speaks about the fiscal cliff in the briefing room of the White House Friday before leaving for Hawaii to spend Christmas with his family.

    Kevin Lamarque/REUTERS

The New Year may be more than a week off, but realistically Congress and the White House have less than that as the clock ticks toward the ?fiscal cliff? with its automatic tax increases and across-the-board spending cuts that could throw an already-weakened economy into a tailspin.

On the Sunday before Christmas, lawmakers worried and postured, with a few ? very few ? expressing just a bit of optimism that anything would be done in time.

"We can do better and we should do better," Senate Budget Committee chairman Kent Conrad said on ?Fox News Sunday.? "I would hope that we would have one last attempt here to do what everyone knows needs to be done: which is a larger plan that really does stabilize the debt and gets us moving in the right direction.?

For now, says Sen. Conrad (who?s retiring), Speaker John Boehner and the White House should ?split the difference? on the most recent offers from both sides, resulting in $1.45 trillion in spending cuts and $1.15 in revenue for a combination of $2.6 trillion.

?You couple that with the $1.1 trillion that?s already been done [in the Budget Control Act] and you?re at $3.7 trillion,? he said.

    Recommended:?'Fiscal cliff' 101: 5 basic questions answered

That leaves a lot of heavy lifting, Conrad concedes: ?Is it perfect? No. Is it everything we?d hoped for? No. Does it match what Bowles-Simpson did? No.?

The general mood Sunday was well expressed by another senator about to retire, Joseph Lieberman.

"It's the first time that I feel it's more likely we'll go over the cliff than not,"?Sen. Lieberman said on CNN?s ?State of the Union.? "If we allow that to happen it will be the most colossal consequential act of congressional irresponsibility in a long time, maybe ever in American history because of the impact it'll have on almost every American.?

Joining Conrad on Fox News, Sen. Jon Barrasso, (R) of Wyoming, said tumbling off the fiscal cliff is inevitable.

?I believe the president is eager to go over the cliff for political purposes,? he said. ?He senses a victory at the bottom of the cliff.?

Obama already has scaled back his ambitions for a sweeping budget bargain. Before leaving the capital on Friday, he called for a limited measure that would extend the Bush-era tax cuts for most people and stave off federal spending cuts. The president also urged Congress to extend jobless benefits for the long-term unemployed that would otherwise be cut off for 2 million people at the end of the year.

But reverting to higher tax rates for even the wealthiest Americans remains a show-stopper for many tea party Republicans in the House of Representatives.

Judging by the latest twists in the drama ? including House Speaker John Boehner?s inability to get his own party behind his ?Plan B? ? plus public opinion polls showing Obama with a much better job rating than Boehner and the GOP seen as mostly to blame, Obama in fact may be more inclined to hang tough.

?The truth of the matter is, if we do fall off the cliff after the president is inaugurated, he?ll come back, propose just what he proposed ? and we?ll end up adopting it,? said Sen. Johnny Isakson, (R) of Georgia on Fox News. ?Why not go ahead and act now??

Why not, indeed said Sen. Amy Klobuchar, also speaking on Fox News.

"It is time to get back to the table," said the Minnesota Democrat. "And I hope if anyone sees these representatives from the House in line shopping or getting their Christmas turkey, they wish them a merry Christmas, they're civil, and then say go back to the table, not your own table, the table in Washington."

Secrecy over Mandela's health fuels concern

View images of civil rights leader Nelson Mandela, who went from anti-apartheid activist to prisoner to South Africa's first black president.

    By Ron Allen, NBC News

JOHANNESBURG -- Nelson Mandela's life is an open book. Volumes chronicle every aspect of his 94 years. However, all that changed earlier this month when he was hospitalized.

South Africa's President Jacob Zuma and his spokesman have released several brief statements saying essentially that Mandela "continues recovering,? and that there?s ?no crisis.??The latest, issued Monday, said Mandela would spend Christmas Day in hospital, with Zuma asking "all freedom-loving people around the world to pray for him."

All this has done little to quell the widespread fear in South Africa and around the world that the end of the life of ?Madiba? -- as the beloved elder statesman is affectionately known here ? is near.

After more than two weeks of rumor, speculation and cryptic comments, very little is known for certain about how Mandela is really doing as he recovers from surgery to remove gallstones and treatment for a respiratory infection.

    Country 'a bit nervous'
It?s been his longest hospital stay since everything changed in South Africa, when Mandela was released from prison and apartheid ended some two decades ago.

?For a man of his age, Mandela is not doing badly,? Tokyo Sexwale, the government?s minister of human affairs, said in an interview in the garden outside his home.

Sexwale, who has known and worked closely with Mandela since the 1970s, is also a trustee of the Nelson Mandela Foundation, or ?the center of his memory,? as Sexwale calls it.

From prisoner to liberator, Nelson Mandela's fight for equality in South Africa serves as a shining example of justice and peace. Here's a look at the pivotal moments in the life of South Africa's first black president.

'Who is my Mandela?' South Africans consider icon's place in a changing world

He said the Foundation receives anywhere from 6,000 to 7,000 messages of prayer, support and concern every week for Mandela.

?I hope, Godspeed, he?ll still be with us for quite some time. The country feels a bit nervous, it?s like a family losing the father,? he added.

He did not reveal specific details about Mandela?s condition or prognosis.

?You have to speak quite loudly to him,? observed Peter Paul Ngwenya, who told NBC News that he was last with Mandela a few weeks ago.

?He is very forgetful,? he said of the man he clearly idolizes. ?He does remember faces and he does remember names.?

Nelson Mandela undergoes surgery to remove gallstones

Former South African President Nelson Mandela is being treated for a recurring lung infection. South African authorities gave few details about his illness, but have now said the 94-year-old is responding well to treatment. NBC's Rohit Kachroo reports.

Sexwale and Ngwenya are former freedom fighters and political prisoners, a generation younger than Mandela.

Sexwale was sentenced in 1977 to 18 years on Robben Island for treason and terrorism.? He served 13 years, much of it while Mandela was there.

    Trying to avoid 'death-watch circus'
Ngwenya was convicted of similar offenses in 1985 and sentenced to 15 years. History was kind to him and as apartheid crumbled he was released early in 1990.

The government has been notably brief about their hero's health.

Its line is that it must protect Mandela's privacy, dignity, and give his doctors the space they need to care for him.

?They really don?t want to turn this into a ghoulish, death-watch circus,? said Brooks Spector, a retired diplomat, academic, and NBC News consultant in South Africa.

Secretary of State Clinton tells of the important life lessons she has learned through her friendship with Nelson Mandela.

Killings of S. Africa farmers a toxic apartheid legacy

What's more, this is not a culture like in America, where doctors routinely hold daily press briefings about high profile cases.

?The government has never felt comfortable with the prying eyes of the media,? Spector said.

First the government said it was a visit for "routine tests."

Later, it was revealed he had a "respiratory infection."

Finally came the announcement about the surgery, all with little explanation, and no opportunity for the media to ask questions.

Since Mandela entered an unidentified hospital on Dec. 8 there has been something of a shell game. Is he at this or that hospital?

Is he heading home, or there already?? Maybe he's going to Qunu, his homeland in a remote part of the Eastern Cape. Mandela has said he wants to spend his final days there.

South Africa releases newly-minted bank notes showing the smiling face of former president Nelson Mandela. NBCNews.com's Dara Brown reports.

    All about peace, reconciliation
For days the government would only say Mandela was in a hospital in Pretoria, the capital, without saying which one.

Professor Adam Habib, of the University of Johannesburg, said the problem was that ?the government tends not to be transparent and that breeds conspiracy theories.??

Habid said his sense of things was that ?Mandela is not on his deathbed.?

He said he did not think the government was lying about Mandela?s condition, but the entire situation should be handled in a ?more mature way.?

It doesn?t help that there?s growing and widespread criticism of the government and Zuma, who faces hundreds of corruption allegations.

And nearly 20 years after Mandela was elected president, it?s difficult to find anyone who truly believes the nation and its leaders have lived up to his dream and his ideals.

Meanwhile, South Africa hopes and prays for the best. When you ask someone here about Mandela, there?s often a pause before an answer. It?s a brief difficult moment when many perhaps allow themselves to contemplate the inevitable.?

Reflecting on the last time he saw the quite frail Mandela a few weeks ago, Ngwenya said he was ?sad to see him like that, but I was happy that he?s still around, because it?s like to have a parent who brought you up, and now you?re looking after them.?

?It is good that your grandchildren and your children can still see this icon,? he added.

Sexwale noted, ?We draw strength not from the fact that Mandela is in the declining part of his years, but from the youth of his ideas. That?s what keeps this country alive.?

Those ideas, he said, were all about peace and reconciliation. ?I hope the memory of his ideas will be that which will drive not only our people here in South Africa, but all those who are inspired all over the world.?
