As North Korea mourns, its neighbor shrugs

Adrienne Mong

All was quiet on the Demilitarized Zone on the Korean Peninsula on the Kim Jong Il's state funeral took place.

By Adrienne Mong, NBC News

SEOUL, South Korea ? As one journalist put it, it said how much we all knew about North Korea that for the better part of Wednesday morning, most of the world remained in the dark about just when ? if at all? ? the state funeral for the country's late leader Kim Jong Il had begun.?

But finally around 2 p.m in Seoul, a feed of the funeral proceedings began transmitting.?We watched online, impressed by the staging and the direction.?

Thousands of people in olive drab stood under snowfall in front of the Kumsusan Memorial Palace ? where Kim Jong Il?s body had been lying in state and where that of his father Kim Il Sung is also housed ? as a procession of vehicles drove past, including the hearse led by Kim Jong Il's son and successor, Kim Jong Un.

Under a dramatic soundtrack and the emotion-laden voice of a North Korean broadcaster, the continuous wailing of mourners could be heard.?Cameras pushed into close-ups of rows and rows of men and women in military uniform sobbing.?

As the procession wound its way through Pyongyang and the snowfall grew heavier, footage of civilians began to appear.? Dressed in thick winter coats, they craned their necks and covered their mouths as they wept.? Those in the front ? closest to the cameras ?jumped up and down with great emotion.? Occasionally, a row of soldiers appeared expressionless and stoic.

As the video was broadcast ? and despite the "live" banner on some cable stations, it was still unclear whether the footage was being transmitted live or had been recorded earlier until one news agency confirmed it was indeed the former.

The mood in Seoul was decidedly different.

'Like father, like son'
Among a small community of North Koreans who fled their homeland years ago, there was scorn for the man they once called their "Dear Leader" and a touch of hope that his death may usher in long-awaited change.

"Kim Jong Il made three million people starve to death," said Kim Jung-geum, a reporter and radio announcer with Free North Korea Radio.? She escaped from the North eight years ago and has been living in Seoul for the past six years.

"Initially I thought, wow, now we can go home. But the feeling didn?t last even a day," said Kim Sung-min, founder of the station ?which broadcasts a one-hour shortwave radio program back into the North every day.??

"It is the third generation leadership," said Kim, who defected from North Korea?11 years ago.?"Like father, like son.? There is no hope.?There is zero per cent chance of change as Kim Jong Un inheried Kim Jong Il's system."

Adrienne Mong

The streets of Seoul suggested it was business as usual in South Korea as Kim Jong Il's state funeral was held.

His colleague was willing to be a bit more optimistic.? "The dictatorship is over," said Kim Jung-geum quietly.? "A new era will begin with 2012.? I expect that."

Both of them, however, did agree on one thing.? They remembered when North Korean founder Kim Il Sung died.

"I was so sad that I skipped two meals," recalled Kim Sung-min, who was serving in the North Korean military in a northern province at the time.? "It was as if the sun had fallen to earth."

"I cried for Kim Il Sung," said Kim Jung-geum, who was a propaganda teacher at the time.? "We had a food ration system.? People had salaries then.? So I genuinely grieved for his death."

Among South Koreans there was largely indifference.

A trio of college students said they were initially worried about the possible ramifications of Kim Jong Il?s death.? "But now I feel a lot better," said Lee Kyung-min, more keen on visiting a nearby museum than thinking about regional security. None of them were interested in the funeral proceedings.

"It was big news," said Cho Nam-hyun, a reporter for Dong-A Ilbo. "But personally, I think of it just as a head of state who died."

The indifference doesn't come as a surprise to analysts in South Korea.?

"We've been living under the gun for the past?60 years," said Dr. Hahm Chaibong, president of the Asan Institute for Policy Studies.? "You can?t count the number of crises that we've had over the years.??Be it assassinations, commando raids, downing of airplanes, terrorist bombings, and of course more recently nuclear experiments and shelling of islands."

Hahm also offered a final somber thought.

"By and large everyone has learned a lesson as far as to what to expect," he said.? "Everybody knows that there isn?t all that much to expect in terms of radical change?.? If North Korea is going to change, it's not going to because of something we do in the outside world.? They will be the ones who will be undertaking changes because they think it's necessary and because they decide it's time they do it."

President Obama to provide federal funding for Alzheimer's programs

As the world's leading voluntary health organization advocating for Alzheimer's care, support and research, the Alzheimer's Association is pleased that Congress and President Obama have responded to calls by the Alzheimer's Association on behalf of people with Alzheimer's disease, caregivers, health professionals and researchers, to provide federal funding for several programs critical to the Alzheimer's community.

The Fiscal Year 2012 Omnibus Appropriations bill, that was passed last week and signed by President Obama today, includes funding for the National Alzheimer's Project Act (NAPA) Advisory Council on Alzheimer's Research, Care, and Services.? NAPA mandates the development of the first-ever national plan to address the rapidly escalating Alzheimer's crisis and coordination of Alzheimer's disease efforts across the federal government. One year after enactment of NAPA, the Association is delighted that Congressional Appropriators supported the intent of Congress for robust implementation of the statute by providing $250,000 in funding for the Advisory Council. Leadership and foresight by Senate Labor, Health and Human Services, and Education Appropriations Subcommittee Chairman Tom Harkin (D-IA), Ranking Member Richard Shelby (R-AL), House Labor, Health and Human Services, and Education Appropriations Subcommittee Chairman Rep. Denny Rehberg (R-MT) and Ranking Member Rosa DeLauro (D-CT) is appreciated by the Alzheimer's Association and the millions impacted by this fatal disease.

"It is clear that the Alzheimer's Association's efforts on behalf of people living with Alzheimer's disease, families and health professionals, are being heard. We urgently need funding that will provide us with a greater understanding of Alzheimer's as well as provide care and support to those currently impacted," said Robert Egge, Vice President of Public Policy for the Alzheimer's Association. "Our hope is that the priority placed on Alzheimer's disease by the federal government will continue to increase to a level that is proportionate to the human and financial toll of this disease."

Continuing to set an example for successful programs, Congress intends to fund the National Alzheimer's Call Center, which is a helpline run by the Alzheimer's Association that is available 24-hours a day, 7 days a week to provide crisis counseling, care consultation, and information and referral services in 140 different languages for people with the disease, caregivers, families and professionals and all those impacted. Historically, federal funding for the National Alzheimer's Call Center has been included in the annual appropriations bill at $1 million.? This productive private-public partnership has included a matching investment by the Alzheimer's Association to ensure effective support for people impacted by Alzheimer's disease.? The Association is pleased that the program was included in the Administration on Aging (AoA) Aging Network Support Activities program for Fiscal Year 2012. While the specific funding level was not enumerated in the Omnibus bill, the intent of Congress is to continue this successful program.

Cristiane Santos defends Strikeforce belt in 16 seconds

Cristiane Santos defends Strikeforce belt in 16 seconds

In her first fight in a year and a half, Cristiane "Cyborg" Santos took no time to stop Hiroko Yamanaka and retain her belt at the Strikeforce fights in San Diego on Saturday night.

Santos landed a flush right to drop Yamanaka right off the bell. Yamanaka got back to her feet, but Santos inundated her with another flurry of shots. The fight was stopped at just 16 seconds in the first round.

[ Related: Gilbert Melendez holds onto belt with decision win ]

"I'm very happy. I trained hard for a year and a half, and I want to fight more. This was a Christmas gift for you guys," Santos said after the bout. Showtime commentator asked her about a bout with up-and-coming fighter Ronda Rousey.

"I think she speaks too much. I'm ready anywhere, any time."

Santos has cut through the women's featherweight division and doesn't have many other opponents of interest. Her last four fights have ended in a TKO or KO, and her record stands at 11-1. Yamanaka, who has spent most of her career in the Japanese promotion Jewels, is now 12-2.

Pets: The Gift That Keeps on Eating

The following is a guest post.

Just imagine the look on your child?s face when, from underneath the Christmas tree, comes a Golden Retriever puppy. The unbridled joy, unconditional love, and initial enthusiasm will give you the moniker of greatest gift giver in the history of gift giving. Then when someone has to take the dog out, the tables turn and you are stuck with a burden of a beast instead of a precious little pet. If you have children who don?t want to watch after the pet it is one thing, but if you give a separate family or friend a pet you may be giving them another monthly bill.

It may seem like the greatest thing in the world to buy a pet for someone on a birthday or for the holidays, but it can turn sour very quickly. If you are thinking about giving a pet as a gift this holiday season, it is important to conduct some research about the recipient:

-If the person is an altruist, they will alter their earned CD rates in order to accommodate for a new pet.

-If they are realists, they will take it to the humane society in hopes for a new home.

-If they are lazy, they will let it loose in the streets and wish it best of luck.

According to MSN Money, if someone is not ready to own a pet it can become a financial burden with food and medical costs. A new pet takes time to play with, education to feed, and a little bit of psychology to adapt to certain behaviors.

If the person is allergic to certain animals, they may pose as a health risk instead of a new friend. The Center for Disease control says that cat dander is one of the leading triggers of asthma and allergies amongst all people. By giving them a non- hypoallergenic pet you may be putting their health at risk. If you give an older person a more aggressive dog like a Pitbull or a Doberman, you may be putting their life in danger.

According to Web MD, giving a pet as an impulse purchase can leave a person emotionally devastated as well as financially bankrupt. They suggest giving pets only to family members, because friends will not know how to say ?no? as well. Even when picking out a pet for the house, make sure everyone is on board and willing to pitch in unless you are willing to do all the work yourself.

Pets are some of the most wonderful companions in the world and they are available for sale and adoption year round. But just because they are available all of the time, doesn?t mean that everyone should take on the responsibility of owning one. Have honest discussions and take the right precautions if you discover you can?t handle owning a pet.

Ark. Organ Donor to be Honored at Rose Parade

VOL. 126 | NO. 244 | Thursday, December 15, 2011

By Aisling Maki

Updated 3:18PM

Verna Harris is able to work 40 hours a week. She goes to church on Sundays and enjoys taking in a movie now and then.

She still has to make sure she gets adequate rest, but her quality of life has improved tremendously since she underwent a kidney transplant at Methodist University Hospital in April 2010.

?My life is normal now,? Harris said. ?Before I had my transplant, I felt weak all the time. I think I felt good maybe one week out of a month, but now I feel good. I just want to do things and say, ?Wow, I?m living now.? I didn?t feel that before.?

Harris is one of several people who received a new lease on life thanks to organ donor Michael ?Rudy? Gilmore of West Helena, Ark. Gilmore is one of 72 organ donors from the U.S., Canada, Japan and Taiwan being honored with a florograph portrait ? a portrait made entirely of organic plant materials ? on the 2012 Donate Life Rose Parade float in the 2012 Rose Parade Jan. 2 in Pasadena, Calif.

Gilmore was shot to death in April 2010, just months before he would?ve graduated from Arkansas State University in Jonesboro. The 24-year-old?s diploma was awarded posthumously, received by his mother.

More than 1,500 people showed up at Gilmore?s funeral to remember a young man described as friendly, fun-loving and dedicated to helping others.

A journal entry discovered after his death reads, ?The meaning of my life is to help others. ? I was put here to help people some way or somehow.?

Gilmore had registered as an organ donor when he received his driver?s license.

Since the donation, his family has met Harris, as well as Sammy Robinson, the Hughes, Ark., man who received Gilmore?s heart.

Gilmore received his associate?s degree from Phillips County Community College, where his family has started a scholarship fund in his honor.

Friends, family members and transplant recipients gathered Tuesday, Dec. 13, at the college to complete the florograph portrait, which will be shipped to California for the parade.

?It?s a great honor, and although he?s not here with us, he?s here in spirit,? Harris said. ?From what I hear, he was such a nice person. He tried to help people, he was smart in school and he was a hard worker. I hate that this happened to him, but his legacy will always live on.?

The float is sponsored by Mid-South Transplant Foundation Inc., a federally designated organ-procurement organization serving West Tennessee, Eastern Arkansas and North Mississippi.

In addition to the florographs, the float will carry thousands of roses with personal dedications of love and remembrance from around the world in a unique dedication garden.

?The float itself is the nation?s most visible public celebration of organ and tissue donation,? said Randa Lipman, manager of community outreach at Mid-South Transplant Foundation. ?It?s a great chance for us to promote the benefits because there will be 26 recipients who ride on the float and another 72 donors who will be represented as florographs. It?s a great opportunity for us to promote organ donation in such a positive way.?

Mid-South Transplant Foundation will fly Gilmore?s mother, Jerlene, brother DeMarcus and sister Kaneisha to Pasadena for the event.

Gilmore?s killer has not been caught, and Jerlene Gilmore said the holidays are the most emotionally challenging time for her and her family. But she hopes the trip to California ? the family?s first time leaving the Mid-South ? in honor of her son will help heal their broken hearts.

?It?s overwhelming, and it?s a bittersweet situation,? she said. ?Out of all the people they could?ve honored, they chose him and our family, and it?s a high honor for us.?

The 2012 Rose Parade will air on local televisions stations.

NEW YORK (AP) ? Jim Boeheim initially insisted two former Syracuse ball boys were lying when they accused his longtime assistant of molesting them.

Now they're suing the Orange men's basketball coach and the university for defamation, saying he was the one making false statements.

Stepbrothers Bobby Davis and Mike Lang have alleged they were molested by Bernie Fine, who has since been fired and has denied the allegations. A third man also has accused the 65-year-old Fine, who had been Boeheim's top assistant since 1976.

Boeheim "has seriously hurt my reputation but I want people to know the truth," Davis said, reading from a statement at a news conference after the lawsuit was filed in New York State Supreme Court on Tuesday.

When the allegations surfaced Nov. 17, Boeheim staunchly supported Fine, saying the accusations were lies to capitalize on the Penn State child sex abuse case.

"The Penn State thing came out, and the kid behind this is trying to get money," Boeheim told the Syracuse Post-Standard. "If he gets this, he's going to sue the university and Bernie. What do you think is going to happen at Penn State? You know how much money is going to be involved in civil suits? I'd say about $50 million. That's what this is about. Money."

And in an interview with ESPN, which broke the story, Boeheim said: "It is a bunch of a thousand lies that (Davis) has told. You don't think it is a little funny that his cousin is coming forward?"

Lang said that when Boeheim suggested "my little brother and I were lying," he "felt sick to my stomach."

University spokesman Kevin Quinn declined to comment. The U.S. attorney's office is investigating for potential criminal charges.

"Boeheim's statements were even worse given his 35 years of opportunity to observe Fine at close quarters, and at least seven years of opportunity to see Fine with Bobby Davis on trips, at practices, in Manley Field House and at games," the suit says.

Victim advocates reacted angrily to Boeheim's initial comments and called for him to resign or be fired. He later said he was wrong to question the motives of the accusers.

That's not enough, said the two men's attorney, Gloria Allred, whose recent clients include a woman who accused presidential candidate Herman Cain of making unwelcome sexual advances.

"Although Boeheim eventually acknowledged that he 'misspoke,' those words came too little too late," Allred said. "One of Syracuse's most respected individuals had already told the world repeatedly that Bobby Davis and Mike Lang were nothing but liars and out for money and nothing else.

"Boeheim has not suffered any consequences in his employment for using his position of power within the university to make these false, inflammatory and injurious statements about Bobby and Mike."

On Nov. 27, Zach Tomaselli, of Lewiston, Maine, also accused Fine, and ESPN aired a tape in which a woman the network identified as Fine's wife tells Davis she knew "everything" that was going on. After Fine was fired that night, Boeheim released a statement saying he regretted any statements he made that "might have been insensitive to victims of abuse."

On Nov. 29, Boeheim apologized, but said again he didn't regret defending his old friend based on the information he had at the time, adding that he never worried about his job status in 36 years.

By Dec. 2, he was far more contrite.

"I believe I misspoke very badly in my response to the allegations that have been made," said Boeheim, who spoke slowly and paused frequently during a postgame news conference. "I shouldn't have questioned what the accusers expressed or their motives. I am really sorry that I did that, and I regret any harm that I caused."

Davis, now 39, said in the lawsuit that Fine started molesting him when he was about 11 years old and that the sexual contact continued for almost two decades. A ball boy for six years, Davis said the abuse occurred at Fine's home, at Syracuse basketball facilities and on team road trips, including the 1987 Final Four.

Lang, 45, has told ESPN that Fine began molesting him while he was in fifth or sixth grade.

During an interview with CNN's Piers Morgan on Tuesday night, Lang was asked whether Boeheim should lose his job.

"That's not for me to say," he said. "I certainly hope not, but he did a lot of damage by calling us liars without knowing the facts."

The suit said Boeheim's office was always near Fine's ? and next door at times ? and that Fine's door was generally open, except when Davis was inside with the assistant coach. The lawsuit contradicts Boeheim's assertion to the Post-Standard that Davis went on road trips only if he was baby-sitting Fine's kids; the suit said he traveled with the team before Fine had children and at times when the assistant didn't bring along his family.

The suit includes Davis' assertion that Boeheim saw Davis lying on the bed in Fine's hotel room in his shorts during the 1987 Final Four. In a Nov. 17 telephone interview with The Associated Press, Boeheim denied ever going to the assistant's room, much less seeing Davis there.

"This kid came forward, and there was no one to corroborate his story. Not one. Not one," Boeheim told the AP. "... They said I walked into Bernie's room on the road and saw this. I have never walked into Bernie's room on the road. This isn't true. This just isn't true."

The suit said Boeheim "made each of these statements knowing they were false or recklessly disregarding their truth or falsity."

The suit requests special, compensatory and punitive damages in an amount to be determined at trial. Allred said the university was included because she believed it was legally liable for Boeheim's statements as an employee who often spoke to the media on Syracuse's behalf.

Onondaga County District Attorney William Fitzpatrick said last week that Davis was credible, but he couldn't investigate under state law because the statute of limitations had expired.

The statute of limitations in New York to bring a civil suit for child sexual abuse is five years after the victim turns 18, though there have been several legislative attempts recently to open a one-year window for older incidents.

Allred said she would work with state lawmakers to change the rules.

"That's not the reason we are filing," she said of the lack of options for Davis and Lang to pursue the charges. "The reason we are filing is we have reason to believe our clients were defamed."

Under New York case law, defamation is "making a false statement which tends to expose a person to public contempt, ridicule, aversion or disgrace." Accusing someone of a crime they didn't commit is by nature defamatory, which in this case could mean accusing the two men of lying to authorities.

Albany lawyer Kevin Luibrand, who has two pending defamation cases, said it always comes down to the exact words someone used. Luibrand, who was unfamiliar with Boeheim's precise quotes, said the coach could argue that he made the statements based on what he thought was true.

However, acknowledging later he was ? or may have been ? wrong, as Boeheim did, doesn't undo the initial false statement.

"The truth is always a defense," Luibrand said. "The statements don't necessarily have to be truthful but based on a belief they are truthful."

Davis said he was suing so victims of abuse would not be afraid to come forward.

"We're grateful any time a child sex abuse victim finds the courage to take action against a child predator," David Clohessy, executive director of SNAP, the Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests, said in a statement. "That's an enormous benefit of civil litigation ? it can help uncover evidence of complicity by a predator's colleagues and supervisors, and thus deter others from keeping secret about possible child sex crimes in the future."

Wall Street falls as Europe anxiety lingers (Reuters)

NEW YORK (Reuters) ? U.S. stocks fell on Wednesday with traders focused on a sliding euro and rising Italian bond yields as market anxiety over Europe persisted.

Italy paid a euro-era record high yield of 6.47 percent to sell five-year notes in its first auction of longer-term debt since the European Union moved toward greater fiscal integration.

U.S. stocks have been weighed down this week in part on fears an agreement at last week's EU summit did not go far enough to resolve the two-year-old debt crisis.

The S&P energy sector (.GSPE) fell 1.8 percent as U.S. crude oil prices dropped 3.1 percent. Commodity-related shares were further pressured by a strengthening U.S. dollar.

Copper fell for a third straight session, while gold hit a two-month low and the euro dipped below what some view as a psychological barrier of $1.30.

"It's clear at this point the EU has not done enough, the market doesn't feel it's done enough," said Doreen Mogavero, chief executive of Mogavero, Lee & Co from the floor of the New York Stock Exchange.

"There is this negative feeling about where the economy is going into the next year," Mogavero said.

The Dow Jones industrial average (.DJI) lost 64.45 points, or 0.54 percent, to 11,890.49. The S&P 500 (.INX) dropped 8.71 points, or 0.71 percent, to 1,217.02. The Nasdaq Composite (.IXIC) fell 23.50 points, or 0.91 percent, to 2,555.77.

Investors were also disappointed the U.S. Federal Reserve gave no hints after its Tuesday meeting about new stimulus measures to offset the effects of the European crisis.

Even if a majority of economists polled by Reuters expect no further action from the Fed to boost the economy in the short term, a separate survey showed most primary dealers see the central bank enacting some type of stimulus.

First Solar Inc (FSLR.O) shares fell almost 21 percent to $33.75 after it joined a list of companies including Intel Corp (INTC.O) Dupont and Co (DD.N) and Texas Instruments Inc (TXN.N) that have revised their outlooks lower.

The euro slid to an 11-month low against the dollar as investors speculated the ratings of more euro zone countries may be downgraded in the near term, given that a quick solution to the crisis remains elusive.

An index of home builder stocks (.DJUSHB) dropped 1.3 percent after the National Association of Realtors said data on sales of previously owned homes will be revised downward because of double counting.
